The Ute Indians at one time referred to the White River as the "Smoking River" because of its occasional fog covered mornings in the spring and fall. The White River valley, located in northwest Colorado near Meeker, was a special place to the Utes because of its beauty and abundance of wildlife - qualities that are still readily apparent today. Beginning in the Flat Tops Wilderness of the White River National Forest, the White flows to the Green River in Utah. On its way the water flows between canyon walls and through rich and fertile ranch land creating scenic and memorable images. This freestone river holds arguably some of the nicest wild trout in the west. Small enough to wade, yet big enough to hold many large fish, the White is an excellent trout fishery.

An angler here can expect to catch rainbows, browns, cutthroats and beautiful hybrid cut-bows. Because of the rivers rich aquatic bug life and remoteness a trout over 20 inches is not uncommon. We offer several miles of private water for guided trips in the area we call home. Smoking River Guides is made up of 15 local fishing guides who have all spent a minimum of 10 years each coaxing trout to our clients flies in this pristine setting. Let us help you in making arrangements for a fantastic fly fishing trip. |
